Rat Colors/Markings
Rat Colors
And Type Information
"Every person
should be lucky
enough to be owned
by Rats!"
Rat Colors & Markings:
Rats can have all sorts of colors and markings.
It can be quite difficult to try to compare pictures and descriptions to your rat, since some of the colors look almost exactly the same.
Different rat shows and organizations have different qualifications to just what the patterns or colors have to look like to be considered "Show quality" or meet their specifications.
Most "pet quality" rats are not show quality.
Different countries such as the UK, USA and Australia have different names and standards for colors and markings.
For pet rat owners it isn't all that important to know the exact term or color for what kind of rat you have, you can do your best at guessing.
Below are general descriptions to help the average pet owner.
- Common: is a pet store term used usually for Black hooded or Albino/Pink eyed white rats.
"Common" is also a term used by pet stores for describing "Feeder rats."
- Fancy: is a pet store term for rats with fancy markings.
- Hooded: A hood covers the rats head to just below the shoulders. Hoods can come in basically any color a rat can be.
Black Hooded Dumbo
Apricot Hooded Dumbo
Chocolate Hooded Dumbo
- Saddle or Saddled: The markings on the back of a hooded rat is called a saddle. If the markings are not fully connected to the hood and the tail, then it would be called a mis-marked saddle.
If the pattern is unevenly patterned -not symmetrical -it would be called a Variegated Saddle.
Black Saddled Blaze Dumbo
Black Saddled
- Variegated: Head and shoulders can be any color, with a variegated (Or uneven -Not symmetrical) pattern from the shoulders down to the tail.
Russian Blue Hooded Variegated Saddled
- Blaze or Marble: Has a wedge shaped stripe in between the nose leading up to the head. The wedge stripe will be a different color than the rest of the rats body, usually white.
The blaze marking can vary in size from a stripe to a wedge.
Black Blaze Dumbo
Black Blaze Rex Dumbo
Black Hooded Blaze
Tan Blaze Dumbo
- Bareback: Basically a hooded rat with no markings on their back.
Agouti Hooded Bareback Dumbo
Tan Hooded Bareback Dumbo
- Capped: Has a colored head - does not extend to the shoulders or throat area.
- Berkshire: Berkshire is any color rat with a white underside/belly.
In most cases to be a show quality Berkshire, the rat also needs a triangle shaped spot in the center of their forehead, a different color than the rest of their body (most commonly white.)
Russian Blue Berkshire Dumbo & Agouti Berkshire Dumbo
- Rex: Has curly springy wavy sometimes crimped looking hair. They can have soft or coarse hair.
Rex genes are needed to produce hairless babies. Some soft haired Rexes are referred to as Velveteen.
Rexes have curly whiskers.
At 4 to 6 weeks old Rex babies sometimes loose their hair before their more adult coat grows in.
Black Rex Dumbo
- Hairless also sometimes referred to as double Rex as you need two Rex genes to produce hairless -The rat is not covered in fur but can have random hairs on their bodies. Hairless rats can come in several different colors. They can also have dark markings, a blaze, hood or saddle. Hairless rats have curly whiskers -not straight long whiskers.
Some Female hairless rats have trouble lactating and/or producing enough milk, cation and vigilance she be taken if breeding them. Typically a Rex female will be paired with a hairless male to avoid the issue.
At 4 to 6 weeks old Hairless babies sometimes grow hair before losing it to show their true markings.
- Patchwork or sometimes also referred to as Double Rex is a hairless rat with patches of fur randomly. The patches of fur can change places on the rat from week to week. The hairs on a patchwork are curly like Rex hair. Patchwork's can come in a few different colors and have various markings.
Various Hairless
- Manx/Tailless: Tailless rats are fairly rare and have a difficult time surviving to old age, as rats sweat through their tails and without one they have a hard time maintaining a manageable body heat.
Rats tails are directly connected to their spine so the lack of a tail can cause balancing problems.
Rats with a stump tail seem to do better at balancing then a rat with no stump at all.
- Dark Eyed rats: have black eyes. Commonly called "Black eyed" or "Dark eyed"
Dark Eyed White
- Odd eye rats: They have 2 different colored eyes. They can have one dark eye and one red eye, or one red eye and one ruby eye, or one dark eye and one ruby. They are very unique!

- Black: Black colored rat.
All black rats with no color on their bellies and with black feet are somewhat rare.
Black rats with pink or white feet and white on the belly are more common.

Black with white belly/feet
- Albino/Pink (red) eyed whites: Often referred to as PEWS or REWS, are white rats with pink (Red) eyes.
Red eyed rats tend to sway their heads back and forth to help them see better.
Swaying their heads helps them to focus on objects better.
White rats with red eyes are also commonly referred to as Albino's, however most rats are PEW's not Albino's.
Albino's are actually quite rare, as to be a true Albino it means you have no color pigmentation. Which means Albinos are pink skinned and white haired -no hint of any color on their bodies, feet or ears.
Most Pink eyed whites do have a hint of color on their ears or rump, therefore not being a true Albino.
Most people call all Pink eyed white rats Albinos because it is just easier.

- Roan: The rat can have any color hair with white or black hairs mixed over the other color.
Be aware Roaning can be hidden even a white rat can have roaning mixed in where it is not visable to the eye and/or can carry the gene.
Breeding roans, blues or Dalmatians together can sometimes cause health issues.
The health issues are Megacolon, babies not thriving, babies die before or around weaning age, shortened lifespan, and poor health.
It all depends on the Genetics and it is hard to know just what genes will work together and which will pose a problem.
