Popples are cute little furry critters that pop in and out of their pouches that are attached to their backs.
The Popples made their debut on a one time TV show special called "It's Popple Time" in 1985. Shelley Duval was the host.
A company called "The Puppet studio" produced two puppets of each of the nine characters: one of a hand Puppet or rod puppet, the other a marionette.
The Puppets were made out of the same material Mattel later made the plush Popples out of.
The one time special went over very well, a few months later in 1986, The Popples had a cartoon on TV.
The Popples cartoon aired on the Saturday Morning Kideo TV Cartoon block.
The cartoon aired in 1986 through 1987.
In the cartoon, 9 main Popples became friends with brother & sister, Bonnie & Billy.
The Popples tend to go overboard trying to help the kids have fun, usually resulting in a very large mess, that they must clean up before the kids parents find out.
The Popples can pull very odd, large items out of their pouches on occasion. (ie: Elephants, anvils etc. )
Later on in the series, a neighbor family moves in with 2 siblings, Penny & Mike who also have their own Popples.
Penny & Mike have the Rock star's, Pufflings & Baby Popples.
Popples are made by "Those Characters from Cleveland," a subsidiary Company of "American Greetings Inc."

Prize rod puppet:
I happen to get my hands on a Prize rod puppet that was used on the "It's Popple time" show, there are only supposed to be two in existence!
The puppet, has the head tied on with straps to the bottom body half.
The Popple only has one arm, the arm has a little slit in it where you can insert the rod. The Popple has string coming out the back of it's head, if you pull on the string the eyes will close.


Popples Plush items:

The 9 main Popples character plush were made in three sizes, Small, Medium & Large.
As a general rule, but not true in all cases, The boy Popples have hard plastic noses, while the girls have furry noses.
The first releases of Popples Plush, dated 1985 did not come with a Popples logo patch on their pouches.
The Popples plush came with small Popples booklets (Inside the bottom of the box), that had puzzles, mazes, riddles & other Popples product offers.

    Basket plush:
    This is a Popples plush with a basket/compartment on the back where the pouch should be. Basket does not transform.

    Rock Star Popples:

    The Rock star Popples were quite the loud duo, singing songs wherever they went.

    These Popples plush came with small Popples booklets (Inside the bottom of the box), that had puzzles, mazes, riddles & other Popples product offers.
  • Punkity Girl Punk Medium Plush comes with Velcro microphone.
  • Punkster Boy Punk Medium Plush comes with Velcro guitar.
  • Punkity Promotional plush Popple - Seen one. Tag reads "sample, Promotional item not for resale."

    Babies:

    The Popple Babies have rattles in their tails and both come with bottles that squeak.
    These Popples plush came with small Popples booklets (Inside the bottom of the box), that had puzzles, mazes, riddles & other Popples product offers.

  • Bibsy Pink baby with pink & blue hat, booties, bib & bottle.
  • Cribsy White baby with purple and white hat, bib & booties. Green & yellow bottle.

    Puffling Popples:


    The Pufflings can hang from trees inside out and transform Popping right off the trees!
    All of the Pufflings come with a rubber tag with a joke on it.
    Pufflings came in boxes in the U.S.
    Pufflings came loose with tags and no boxes in other countries. (see pictures for display box)

    The Cheerleader Popples are Popple Characters dressed in Cheerleader outfits, when transformed they have nice colorful streamers attached to their pouches.
    The Cheerleader Popples had a small 2 sided poster with Popples products pictured on it, located in the bottom of the box.

    These stickers are rare game pieces that were attached to Capri Sun packages, Backing of the sticker is a coupon to get a discount when buying Popples.

  • BigKick- Turns into a soccer ball when transformed.

  • Net set- Turns into a Tennis ball when transformed. (Not made in the U.S.)

    Pocket Popples are small enough to fit in your pocket, these Popples all have fabric bodies and hard PVC arms, face & legs.

    Flower Popples transform to look like flowers!

    Pillow Popples:

    These Popples are wearing pajamas, and when transformed they pop into sleeping bag pouches!
    Sometimes these are referred to as Slumber Popples or Pajama Popples.
    These Popples have a different Popples logo than on any other item.

    There are 6 Fruit Popples, they all come in boxes that have the logo of what fruit they are on the box.
    There is no designated Fruit Popples logo.
    All of the Fruit Popples Transform from Bugs to fruit.
    Fruit Popples were made in England, France & Australia. (Not made in the U.S.A.)

    French Plush:

    These Popples items were made only in France. All of their tags are marked, "Made in Delplay France."
    These 3, French Popples are the standard Small size.

    Special Edition Plush:

    The Dalmatian Popple is a "Special edition" and is not part of the animal series.
  • Spot-Dalmatian Puppy Popple
    The dog is white with black spots and has long puppy dog ears.



    Animal Series Plush:

    Popples animals were only sold in France. They were not distributed in the U.S./Canada.


  • Animals series Bunny/Rabbit
    The Rabbit has long rabbit ears, nice rabbit teeth and its feet are up a little higher so he can hop about.
  • Animals Series Bird/Parrot
    The Parrot has feathers for a tail and feathers on the top of his head, he also has a nice parrot beak.
  • Animals Series Dog
    The dog is blue and has long puppy dog ears.

    Costume Popples:

    Costume Popples are Special Popples dressed up in outfits!
    These Popples were not made in the U.S.A.
